ધરતી પર જ્યારે પણ પાપ વધી જાય છે અને ધર્મનો નાશ થવા લાગે છે, ત્યારે ભગવાને પોતે જ ધરતી પર જન્મ લઈને પાપોનો નાશ કર્યો છે. શાસ્ત્રો અનુસાર ધરતી પર કુલ ચાર યુગ છે. જેમાંનો સૌથી પ્રથમ યુગ સતયુગ હતો. આ યુગ સત્યનો પ્રતીક હતો. પણ ધીરે ધીરે મનુષ્યનાં પાપો એટલા વધતા ગયા કે કળિયુગનો સમય આવી ગયો. શ્રીમદ્ ભગવદ્ ગીતામાં શ્રી કૃષ્ણએ કહ્યું હતું કે જ્યારે પૃથ્વી પરના પાપો બમણા થઈ જશે અને મનુષ્ય એકબીજાના શત્રુ બનશે, ત્યારે તે યુગ કળિયુગ કહેવાશે. આવી સ્થિતિમાં અન્ય ત્રણ યુગની જેમ, કળિયુગનો સમયગાળો પણ હજારો વર્ષનો હશે, જેનો અંત ફરી એકવાર ભગવાન પોતે જ કરશે.
શ્રી કૃષ્ણએ ગીતામાં જણાવ્યું હતું કે ભગવાન વિષ્ણુએ ક્યારેક પરશુરામનો અવતાર, તો ક્યારેક મત્સ્ય અવતાર તો ક્યારેક શ્રી રામનો અવતાર ધારણ કરીને પૃથ્વી પરના પાપનો અંત કર્યો છે. આવી સ્થિતિમાં જ્યારે પાપ, અનૈતિકતા, લોભ અને અધર્મ તેની હદને પાર કરી જશે, ત્યારે વિષ્ણુ ભગવાન ફરી એક વખત કલ્કી અવતાર ધારણ કરીને પૃથ્વી પર જન્મ લેશે. જણવી દઈએ કે સતયુગથી લઈને આજ સુધી વિષ્ણુ ભગવાને ધરતી પર નવ અવતારોમાં જન્મ લીધો છે, આવી સ્થિતિમાં આ કળિયુગનો અંત કરવા માટે તેમના દસમા અવતાર કલ્કીનો વારો છે. દરેક વ્યક્તિ આ યુગનો અંત જોવા માટે તેમના કલ્કી સ્વરૂપની રાહ જોઈ રહ્યા છે.
શાસ્ત્રો અને પુરાણો અનુસાર ભગવાન વિષ્ણુ કાળિયુગનો અંત લાવવા અને નવો યુગ સ્થાપિત કરવા માટે ભગવાન વિષ્ણુ કલ્કી અવતાર લેશે. આ માટે, કળિયુગના અંતિમ સમયે, તે શ્રાવણ મહિનાના શુક્લ પક્ષની પાંચમના દિવસે જન્મ લેશે. કદાચ આ જ કારણ છે કે દર વર્ષે ભારતમાં શ્રાવણ મહિનાના શુક્લ પક્ષની પાંચમને કલ્કી જયંતી તરીકે ખૂબ ધામધૂમથી ઉજવવામાં આવે છે. પુરાણોમાં 5000 વર્ષ પહેલાં લખવામાં આવ્યું હતું કે ભગવાન કલ્કીનો જન્મ ઉત્તર પ્રદેશના મુરાદાબાદ જિલ્લાના સંભલ નામના સ્થળે વિષ્ણુયષા બ્રાહ્મણ પરિવારના ઘરે થશે અને તે ઘોડા પર સવાર થઈને દુષ્ટ અને પાપીઓનો નાશ કરશે.
જણાવી દઈએ કે શ્રીમદ્ ભગવદ્ ગીતાના 12 મા સ્કંધના 24 માં શ્લોકમાં કહેવામાં આવ્યું છે કે જ્યારે ગુરુ, સૂર્ય અને ચંદ્ર ગ્રહો એક સાથે પુષ્ય નક્ષત્રમાં પ્રવેશ કરશે, ત્યારે ભગવાન કલ્કી એટલે કે વિષ્ણુના દસમા અવતારનો જન્મ થશે. તેનો જન્મ થતાંની સાથે જ ફરી એકવાર વિશ્વમાં સતયુગનો યુગ શરૂ થશે. શાસ્ત્રો અનુસાર કળિયુગનો સમયગાળો 4 લાખ 32 હજાર વર્ષ છે, જેમાંથી ફક્ત 5,119 વર્ષ પૂરા થયા છે. આવી સ્થિતિમાં કળિયુગનો અંત ખૂબ જ દૂર છે.
એક સમયે સતયુગ સ્વર્ગ યુગ માનવામાં આવતો હતો, પરંતુ આ યુગ પછી મનુષ્ય ધીરે ધીરે પાપ તરફ આગળ વધતા ગયા અને આજે સમય એવી જગ્યાએ પહોંચી ગયો છે કે જ્યાં લોકો પોતાનાને જ દુશ્મન બનાવી રહ્યા છે. લોભ અને ક્રોધે માણસની અંદરની માનવતાનો નાશ કર્યો છે. પરંતુ જ્યારે વિષ્ણુનો દસમો અવતાર પૃથ્વી પર જન્મ લેશે, ત્યારે મનુષ્યની બુદ્ધિ પાછી આવશે અને દુષ્ટતાનો અંત થશે. પુરાણોની આ બધી વાતો કળિયુગના અંતમાં ચોક્ક્સપણે સાચી સાબિત હશે કારણ કે ચારેય બાજુ તેવું જ બની રહ્યું છે જેવું વેદો અને ગ્રંથોમાં લખવામાં આવ્યું છે.
