એવું કહેવામાં આવે છે કે ગંગા સ્નાન કરવાથી બધા પાપ ધોવાઈ જાય છે. તેમાં સ્નાન કરનારા લોકોને સ્વર્ગ મળે છે. પરંતુ શું સાચે જ એવું હોય છે? આ વાતનો ખુલાસો ભગવાન ભોલેનાથે કર્યો હતો. તેમણે માતા પાર્વતીને કહ્યું હતું કે કેવી રીતે લોકોને ગંગા સ્નાન પછી સ્વર્ગ નસીબ હોય છે.

સોમવતી સ્નાનનો તહેવાર હતો. ગંગા કિનારે લાખો ભક્તો સ્નાન કરવા માટે આવ્યા હતા. આ દરમિયાન શિવ પાર્વતી ફરવા નીકળ્યા હતા. ત્યારે જ ગંગા નદી પર ઉભેલી ભીડને જોઇને માતા પાર્વતીએ શિવજીને તેના વિશે પૂછ્યું. ત્યારે શિવજીએ જણાવ્યું કે આ બધા લોકો આજે સોમવતી તહેવાર પર ગંગામાં સ્નાન કરવા માટે આવ્યા છે. અહીં સ્નાન કરવાથી સ્વર્ગની પ્રાપ્તિ થાય છે.

તેના પર પાર્વતીજીના મનમાં સવાલ ઉભો થયો કે ગંગામાં સ્નાન કરનારા આ બધા લોકો સ્વર્ગમાં જશે, તો સ્વર્ગનું શું થશે? શું ત્યાં એટલી જગ્યા હોય છે? અને છેલ્લા લખો વર્ષોથી જે લોકોએ ગંગામાં સ્નાન કર્યું છે તે લોકો સ્વર્ગમાં કેમ નથી? તેના વિશે ભોલેનાથે કહ્યું કે માત્ર શરીરને ભીનું કરવું અને તેને ધોવું જ પૂરતું નથી હોતું, મનની વિકૃતિ પણ ધોવી જરૂરી છે. ત્યારે પાર્વતીજીએ પૂછ્યું કે તે કેવી રીતે જાણી શકાય કે કયા વ્યક્તિએ માત્ર શરીરને ધોયું અને કોણે તેનું મન શુદ્ધ કર્યું?

પાર્વતીજીના આ સવાલનો જવાબ આપતા શિવજીએ કહ્યું કે હું તમને આ વાત એક ઉદાહરણથી સમજાવીશ. હું કદરૂપીનું રૂપ લઈ રહ્યો છું અને તમે એક સુંદર કન્યા બની જાઓ. પછી આપણે બંને ગંગા સ્નાન તરફ જવાના માર્ગ પર બેસી જશું. કોઈ પૂછે તો મારા દ્વારા જણાવેલી સ્ટોરી સંભળાવજો. પાર્વતીજીએ એવું જ કર્યું.

હવે શિવજી બિહામણા બનીને સૂઈ ગયા અને પાર્વતી એક સુંદર સ્ત્રી બનીને તેની બાજુમાં બેસી ગયા. ગંગા સ્નાન માટે જતા દરેક લોકો તેમને ઘૂરી-ઘૂરીને જોવા લાગ્યા. આ વિચિત્ર જોડી પર કોઈને વિશ્વાસ ન આવ્યો. દરેક વ્યક્તિ એ જ વિચારી રહ્યા હતા કે એક સુંદર કન્યા આવા કદરૂપી વ્યક્તિ પાસે શું કરી રહી છે. કેટલાક લોકોએ તો માતા પાર્વતીને પોતાના કદરૂપી પતિને છોડીને પોતાની સાથે ચાલવા પણ કહ્યું. તેના પર માતા પાર્વતીને ગુસ્સો પણ આવ્યો પરંતુ શિવજીને આપેલા વચન હેઠળ તે શાંત રહ્યા.

જ્યારે પણ કોઈ પાર્વતીજીને આખી વાત પૂછતા હતા, ત્યારે તે શિવજીના શબ્દોનું પુનરાવર્તન કરતા હતા. ‘આ કદરૂપી મારા પતિ છે. તેમની ગંગામાં સ્નાન કરવાની ઇચ્છા છે. તેથી હું તેને મારા ખભા પર લઈને આવી છું. આ સ્ટોરી સાંભળીને ગંગા સ્નાન તરફ જતા મોટાભાગના લોકોએ પાર્વતીજીની મદદ કરવાના બદલે તેમને પતિને છોડિને પોતાની સાથે આવવા કહ્યું. અને અન્ય લોકોએ તેમને અવગણીને પોતાના કામથી કામ રાખ્યું.

પછી એક સજ્જન વ્યક્તિ આવી અને આ સ્ટોરી સાંભળીને રડવા લાગ્યા. તેમણે માતા પાર્વતીને પ્રણામ કર્યા અને કહ્યું કે તમારા જેવી સ્ત્રી ધન્ય છે જે પતિની આવી સ્થિતિમાં પણ પત્ની ધર્મ નિભાવી રહી છે અને તેમની ઈચ્છાપૂર્ણ કરવા માટે ગંગા સ્નાન કરવા લઈ જઈ રહી છે. આ સજ્જન વ્યક્તિ એ પાર્વતીજીને મદદ કરવાનો પ્રસ્તાવ પણ કર્યો. તેમણે કદરૂપી સ્વરૂપ ધારણ કરેલા શિવજીને પોતાના ખભા પર ઉઠાવ્યા અને ગંગા તટ પર છોડી જવાની ઈચ્છા વ્યક્ત કરી. આટલું જ નહિં તેમણે પોતની પાસે રાખેલું સત્તૂ પણ બંનેને ખવડાવ્યું.

આ રીતે માતા પાર્વતીના મનની ચેતના શાંત થઈ ગઈ. તેઓ સમજી ગયા કે ગંગામાં સ્નાન કરવા માટે તો ઘણા લોકો આવે છે પરંતુ મનની શુદ્ધિ કરીને ખૂબ ઓછા લોકો પરત ફરે છે. શિવજી એ કહ્યું કે ગંગા સ્નાનનું મહત્વ ત્યારે જ છે જ્યારે તમે મનની શુદ્ધિ પણ કરી લો. બસ આવા લોકોને જ ગંગા સ્નાન પછી સ્વર્ગની પ્રાપ્તિ થાય છે.
